Twitter Discontinues Tweetdeck AIR, Android and for iPhone: Will Stop Functioning From Early May

Featured Home Page Discussion Twitter Discontinues Tweetdeck AIR, Android and for iPhone: Will Stop Functioning From Early May

This is a big move and i'm sure it'll inconvenience lots of power users.

Before it finally closes, in the meantime, it looks like there will be outages as the API transitions.

I'm not happy hearing this news.

TweetDeck is the most powerful Twitter tool for tracking real-time conversations. Its flexibility and customizable layout let you keep up with what?s happening on Twitter, across multiple topics and accounts, in real time. To continue to offer a great product that addresses your unique needs, we?re going to focus our development efforts on our modern, web-based versions of TweetDeck. To that end, we are discontinuing support for our older apps: TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone. They will be removed from their respective app stores in early May and will stop functioning shortly thereafter. We?ll also discontinue support for our Facebook integration. Twitter Discontinues Tweetdeck AIR, Android and for iPhone: Will Stop Functioning From Early May [tweetdeck.posterous.com] In many ways, doubling down on the TweetDeck web experience and discontinuing our app support is a reflection of where our TweetDeck power-users are going. Over the past few years, we?ve seen a steady trend towards people using TweetDeck on their computers and Twitter on their mobile devices. This trend coincides with an increased investment in Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android ?? adding photo filters and other editing capabilities, revamping user profiles and enhancing search. That said, we know this applies to most of our users ?? not all of them. And for those of you who are inconvenienced by this shift, our sincere apologies. Additionally, TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone rely on v1.0 of Twitter?s API, which we are retiring starting this month. Leading up to that retirement, Twitter?s platform team will be performing occasional tests that will affect applications that rely on API v1.0. Over the next two months users of TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone may experience some outages with those apps before they are removed from their respective app stores in early May.

They are destroying all of the 3rd party clients by hobbling their API calls or by buying them and doing this. It wouldn't be so sad if there were any decent Twitter clients out there to replace TweetDeck.

I use Twicca (great mobile app for Twitter) on my Android phone and they pushed a notification about this last week. They will be updating to support the new Twitter, but warned that the timeline may not be available, or something to that affect.

Not sure if they aren't able to support changes to the new timeline, or that Twitter won't let them, or that the timeline will disappear completely. Guess we'll find out.

It's likely the first indication will be the app operating unreliably. If you see that, it's likely to stop working.

I'm reliant upon tweetdeck, so it'll be a blow for me.

Twitter Nearing $10 Billion Valuation

Quite a valuation, and clearly lots of interest.

Fortune has now learned from multiple sources that there is yet another block of early employee shares available, at a valuation of $9.9 billion.Twitter Nearing $10 Billion Valuation [finance.fortune.cnn.com]

I love Twitter but this is nuts.

Brace for another internet bubble to burst.

This is just what happened the last time when a bunch of sites got overvalued and eventually all the fancy bookkeeping used to line the pockets of the investors caused the market to collapse.

What are the other over valued companies? Amazon is sky high and will crash now that I can just as easily pay sales tax at a local store. 10B for twitter seems rather insane. Don't know anyone who uses it anymore and can't magine they have that much revenue.

Don't know anyone who uses it anymore ...

LOL

Me, netmeg, brett, engine, phranque, etc., it's very active.

Twitter Uses DMARC to Act Against Email Phishing For User Passwords

Featured Home Page Discussion Twitter Uses DMARC to Act Against Email Phishing For User Passwords
 12:17 am on Feb 22, 2013 (gmt 0)
Earlier this month, we began using a new technology called DMARC that makes it extremely unlikely that most of our users will see any email pretending to be from a Twitter.com address. DMARC is a relatively new security protocol created by a group of organizations to help reduce the potential for email-based abuse.Twitter Uses DMARC to Act Against Email Phishing For User Passwords [blog.twitter.com]

thanks for sharing this, engine. I really feel there should be a greater PSA effort by all of these social and email sites to better educate unsuspecting users.

Personally, I think it could be one simple slide: NEVER click on a link in an email or on a social network that makes you login. Rather, always go directly to the site and look for the alleged message, friend invite, etc."

By following this rule I have done a pretty good job protecting my passwords. What are some of the rules of thumb other savvy webmasters and members in here use?

"What are some of the rules of thumb other savvy webmasters and members in here use?"

If I'm less than 100% sure of the validity of any email, I always hover over embedded links to see what they point to before actually clicking on them. Unless they're doing something sneaky with close misspellings (or 1 vs. l), it's usually quite obvious.

Perhaps it's just me that is even more cautious. I avoid the clicks for stats, if possible, to avoid the tracking.

Passwords are important, but you can also help by having a unique e-mail for the service you're using.

The services have to pick up their game, imho, but users need to be educated about their own security.

I implemented DMARC on several domains last year. It's interesting to see reports on mail that can't be tracked as coming from my servers. There's not much, but it does exist.

I hope more big companies implement this. It's simple to setup, and you can run it in reporting mode until you're ready to move to the stricter settings.
